Chapter nine
It was probably natural to feel excited, or even scared, given what he was doing. Standing out in front of Terrace Springs, by the guard station there. It was still light out, but having a curfew meant he was wary of the coming darkness. Which was probably the real point. After all, the danger of being there wouldnât be that much greater at nine-thirty-four than it was ten minutes earlier, or even an hour.
That wasnât the point, of course.
No, the real reason for him being there, clearly... Was to give him something to do, while the grown-ups went and handled the real problem. Even sending someone in to talk to the guards there would be about that. A babysitting duty. Which had to suck, for the person coming in. Cleper.
Jim and Laura could have also just told him to stay in the house, really. Then, with a single call to the guard on duty there, they could have gotten everyone on the right page. Which, of course, theyâd actually be doing anyway. That was, suddenly, really clear to him. Even if they just called to let everyone know that there really wasnât an army of demons headed their way. That part, once he thought about it for a few minutes, standing there in the cooling twilight, didnât make much sense at all.
That there would be a threat heading there, from that far away.
If it had started just down the street, then sure. Jake could have bought that pretty easily. Even better, if it had come from inside the wall there. Originating in Mexico, and coming at them, taking four days didnât work. Anyone who was being targeted would either make a run for it, or get ready to fight, far too easily, given that.
Meaning it was, if real at all, some kind of trick. The question was who that feint was pointed at. If it was him, as a game or exercise, then it wasnât really that important and everyone else would be told about it, probably as he stood there, waiting.
On the other hand, if it was pointed at someone else... Well, then the point was probably to get whoever it was to run away. To clear out. A decent van or even bus could easily move away at six hundred miles a day. The supposed demon army was moving much slower than that. Really, a drive to an airport would get people away even faster, but they might need to travel in a pattern that would get the demons to follow them, without hitting too many towns or cities.
Jacob moved, after about seven minutes, to tap on the door of the guard hut, which had it opening, a rather surly looking man opening it. One who heâd met, a few times.
The man lightened, on seeing him.
âJake. Youâre out a bit late. Need me to arrange a ride back to your place?â
He didnât have a name for the man, even though he knew that heâd heard it, at least three times.
